Winter Wolves

GRV Scenario 1

East of Suomussalmi, Finland, January 7, 1939: The Soviet invasion
of Finland was grinding to a halt. Poor planning and the sheer tenacity
of the Finnish defense had produced staggering losses on the Russian
side and minimal gains strategically. In December, Mannerheim, the
Finnish commander, organized a series of savage counterattacks all
along the front. The Russians, overwhelmed, strained to escale isolated
pockets rapidly encircled by Finnish advances. Broken and disorganized,
remnants of the 44th Soviet Division fought a desperate winter battle
to break out east and home.
